“Pretty much unchanged since Sir Christopher Wren designed them at the end of the 17th Century, the Long Wards at the Royal Hospital Chelsea – home to the Chelsea Pensioners – are getting a makeover.
The small wooden rooms – measuring 9 x 9 ft – are being modernised and getting bigger. The distinctive wood paneling will remain, but residents will enjoy the luxury of en suite facilities and direct daylight.”
Take a tour of the old rooms – and see how they will look in future. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26886162 Production by Paul Kerley. Publication date 8 April 2014.
Ultrasafe Fire Suppression protecting the Chelsea pensioners
As Phase II of the fire suppression system designed and installed by Ultrasafe is signed off and the surveyor inspects the life safety system which protects the Chelsea pensioners, we are delighted to enter Phase III with pride and excitement. This short clip provided by the BBC gives you as insight into this magnificent building and the quality of property and person within. Our system was not only approved and endorsed as the preferred system by Wates Construction and Halcrow Yolles but also by the Royal Hospital Chelsea Board – the long wards and living pods have a sleeping fire fighter watching over them 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year.
Rick Libbey, Group Managing Director and former British Army Brigadier says:
“It is an outstanding image of Ultrasafes water storage vessels, in their gleaming red powder coated stainless steel, standing proud and ready to protect the pensioners and building, our own Soldiers in the fight against fire deaths and destruction of our Listed Buildings by fire”
Having a 30 year career in the British Army and former the Director of The Prince’s Trust in Wales and South West England, Rick has a higher level of appreciation for this project, now entering our third year on site and our commitment and passion are as strong as ever.
